None of us are free until Palestine is free

The ongoing conflict in Palestine has been marked by a devastating pattern of civilian targeting by Israeli forces. This systemic violence has resulted in countless deaths, injuries, and the displacement of millions of Palestinians. The implications of this humanitarian crisis extend far beyond the borders of Palestine, serving as a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of marginalized and targeted communities everywhere, including in the United States.

Civilian Casualties and Human Rights Violations

  • Hospital turn to rebel by is really forces

Since 2000, over 100,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, more than 80% of whom were civilians. In May 2021 alone, over 250 Palestinians, including 66 children, were killed in a brutal Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip. These deaths are not isolated incidents but part of a systematic policy of excessive force and extrajudicial killings.

October 2023 marked the beginning of a near year long assault on Gaza with scores of innocent casualties that have gone ignored and erased by the U.S. governments refusal to even acknowledge the death counts emerging from the strip.

  • Israel shuts down the last functioning hospital in the Gaza Strip

Israeli forces have also engaged in widespread human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests, torture, and the demolition of Palestinian homes and infrastructure all at the expense of U.S. taxpayers. These actions have created a climate of fear and intimidation, making it impossible for Palestinians to experience their basic human right to life.

The Impact on Marginalized Communities in America

The targeting of civilians in Palestine has implications that marginalized communities in the United States have know about for generations: “America will not protect you”. It serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of American rights and the increasing unchecked and sanctioned state violence.

*State-sanctioned violence:** The U.S.’s allowal of Israeli government's justification of civilian targeting based on “security concerns” creates dangerous precedent for other governments to legitimize the use of excessive force against their own citizens. This shows how much the state can get away with when it comes to communities of color, immigrants, and other BIPOC groups in America, who are often targeted by law enforcement with impunity.

*Normalization of violence:** The ongoing violence against Palestinians normalizes the idea that certain groups of people are expendable. This can lead to a desensitization to the suffering of marginalized communities and a privileged willingness to accept human rights abuses as tolerable.

*Erosion of trust in institutions:** The U.S. support for targeting of civilians by Israeli forces undermines American’s trust in government and law enforcement. Governments demonstrate their prioritization in capitalizing off of war and tragedy in order to line the pockets of special interest. This erosion of trust proves to Americans that their lives are not valued by their government can make it difficult for marginalized communities to attempt to seek justice or even feel safe in their own communities.

Solidarity and Resistance

  • Family in Gaza having lost everything after the attacks in 2024

In the face of this harrowing crisis, it is imperative for communities in the United States to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people. This solidarity includes:

*Advocacy for human rights:** Calling on the U.S. government to condemn Israeli human rights violations and hold Israel accountable for its actions.

*Support for Palestinian civil society:** Providing financial and organizational support to Palestinian human rights organizations and community groups working to resist oppression.

*Challenging Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism:** Recognizing the intersectionality of oppression faced by Palestinians and other BIPOC communities and challenging the narratives that justify state violence against them.

The civilian targeting in Palestine is a grave humanitarian crisis that has devastating implications for BIPOC communities both in Palestine and the United States. By standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people and challenging state violence, we can create a more just and equitable world where all lives are valued and human rights are protected
